obligatory doin' time lyrics here (closed)
WHO: nami & luffy
WHEN: post-event during all the arrests
WHERE: the jail
WHAT: the inevitable result of luffy asking 'what's the worst that could happen'. two pirates spotted in the unchained god's temple end up in holding, hijinx ensue
WARNINGS: none yet.
[ Sitting at the edge of the rudimentary bench in their cell, Nami watches the shadow of a passing guard as it bends its way out of sight, the footfalls accompanying it fading as well. No more patrols for about an hour, by her guess.
With a weary sigh she glances over at Luffy, scrunching her lips up in a disdainful grimace as she arches an eyebrow at him. ] Sorry, what was it you said before we left the house?
[ Nami’s fairly sure she doesn’t need to point out how it seems like every time Luffy says something to suggest that nothing will go wrong, it does, but she’ll glare at the bars for a moment anyway, finally letting his hand go (has she been holding onto it this whole time?!) so she can scoot back on the bench. ]
Be my lookout, okay?
[ Four lockpicks might cut it back home on the East Blue. Hell, four might even be enough for the Grand Line once they get there, but being thrust into a strange world does things to a woman’s sense of vigilance, and while Nami’s had three of her lockpicks taken off of her by the guard who searched them before sticking them in this cell - that leaves her with two still concealed on her person.
She retrieves one from a very slender hiding spot where the sole of her shoe meets the rest of her boot and gives one more look around the holding area before she’s off to the door to try and pick the lock. ]
Guess they noticed us in the temple.

Luffy just never took their recent theft of a certain book into consideration and winding up in jail is a shock, but a fun one. Nami doesn't need to ask why Luffy has a perpetual grin on his face as he looks around the cell. Wow, jail so soon in his career! )
You said "One single kebab that you can walk and eat,"?
( A kiss of death by tempting fate doesn't cross his mind. Luffy is thinking of something else he'd seen as they were being moved to the cell and he blinks as Nami lets go of his hand. Right, she's going to pick the lock. )
Got it. ( Luffy doesn't hang around when such important things are in the balance and he wastes no time in squeezing through the cell bars; it's easy enough when they're not the product of seastone and he's already moving out of sight without a word. There's ten agonising minutes of silence before Luffy reappears, squeezing back into the cell to sit down again.
With a poor guard's lunch in his hands. )
You want half? ( Apparently it's okay to share when it's someone else's food. )

[ Nami's efforts in getting the lock open are momentarily stalled as Luffy moves to squeeze between the bars of the cell, frowning after him in confusion. As much as she'd like to, Nami doesn't call after him, aware that while they're no one patrolling around where they're being kept, there must still be guards somewhere. Instead, she chides herself for letting him go - painfully aware it was the only thing keeping him from wandering off - and gets back to work on the lock, confident he would never leave her behind for the sake of saving himself.
The lock's a little fiddlier than she would have liked it to be, still fighting to get those tumblers to click how she wants them to when he returns - with a sandwich.
Pausing again to look over her shoulder at him and his sandwich, Nami squints at Luffy, cocking her head past the bars, where both her hands are working to finesse the lockpick into the sweet spot she's sure she's about to find. ]
Kind of don't have the hands free for it right now. Please tell me nobody saw you do that.

No-one saw me, they're all patrolling around the other side of this place. Though gotta say, they really got the jump on us. I'm impressed.
( Luffy shrugs, half of the sandwich already decimated. They hadn't brought their bounties with them but to go from unknown to wanted in such a short time is certainly something; who knew seeing the chained god would cause so many problems?
Nami may need some space to get that lock picked, but she won't get much of it as Luffy shifts closer, holding the sandwich half to the navigator's face. )
I've got free hands and food tastes better when it's someone else's!

In her periphery, she spies the offered sandwich, and there's a beat where all Nami does is puff out a sigh before she leans sideways, taking a bite as her free hand pats down her side, seeking out a second lockpick. ]
Tell me you noticed if stuff was in the same room as this sandwich. [ She asks after swallowing one bite of sandwich and going back in for another, chiding herself for being as bad as he is. ] I'm not leaving without my gear.
[ One 'aha' later, and she pulls another lockpick out of one of her tunic's seams, using both to get back to work with renewed determination. ]

The whole concept of lockpicking is a fascinating thing, brown eyes watching each movement Nami makes with her tools. The fact someone could open a lock with a piece of metal is a big deal and something Luffy knows he could never replicate. Sure, he could break a lock, but this is something else and the pirate captain is loathe to interrupt it. Sneaking out is easy for him, but breaking said lock would bring the guards crashing down on them. And why would he want to get in the way of Nami and the challenge of picking a jail cell lock? )
I didn't see much, but there were some bags on their tables in the next room over. Looks like it could be our stuff.

Nami turns to look at Luffy, still all too pleased with herself as she stashes her lockpicks back in their hiding places and gets back on her feet. ] We'll check there first.
[ Already moving to go she stops to wait for him, tilting her chin toward the sandwich. ] You can finish that if you want. [ Like he'd just leave it behind. ]

( Luffy is fixated on watching the lockpicking unfold before his eyes, mesmerised at how such small motions with hands could undo even the hardest of work. Even when Nami had been opening the safe from Shells Town there'd been a fascination, but at least this time Luffy gives enough space if only via the conduit of feeding Nami a sandwich.
The lock clicks and the door is open, just like that their freedom sprawls before them and Luffy grins, nose wrinkling. There'll probably be a fight on the way out, a chase, maybe some chaos and he's looking forwards to it. Maybe they'll both have a bounty after this one. )
Thanks. ( There's not a second of hesitation before the rest of the sandwich is jammed into his mouth, cheeks bulging as he chews and nods. Definitely time to go and he steps out of the cell, already heading towards the other door. ) Ready?

Wouldn't want to get a bounty or something.
The sound of motion in the distance to their left makes Nami move with a start, half pushing Luffy into an alcove and steering him out of sight. Ducking down beside him she frowns towards the alcove's opening, wishing for a door and hoping the noise gets further away rather than closer. ]
How close are we to that room? [ She asks in the quietest whisper imaginable, hoping he has the sense to follow suit. ]

Though he'd argue about a bounty; there's nothing wrong with one of those.
He ducks down into the alcove, taking the silent instruction from Nami as he looks over towards a nearby door. Little time had passed from him leaving and returning with food, that doorway had to be it and the pirate nods towards it.)
That way.

The sight of her rucksack makes Nami sigh in relief. Apart from (most) of her crew, her gear, and her notebooks are all she's got, and treasured possessions are almost as affirming to have around as gold - almost. Already in better spirits, once the strap is settled on her shoulder, she glances around the room to make sure there's nothing else worth taking and pockets a ring of keys before looking back to him. ]
Ready to find a way out? [ Then– ] Or is there another sandwich in here?
